Ely Vs. Grand Marias: Your gateways to the BWCA

The BWCA is a vast expanse of protected wilderness of over a million acres in Minnesota right next to the Canadian border, offering a unique blend of serene lakes, dense forests, and a chance to disconnect from modern life. Perfect for those looking for solitude in the great outdoors. It has quickly became one of our favorite trips of the year, so much that it is now an annual trip. So what do you need to know to get started?

Lets start with the basics, before picking an entry point you need to know that there are two gateway towns that you can enter the BWCA from. Ely and Grand Marais, there are a few others but these are the ones we have visited so far. So whats the difference?

Ely: The Wilderness Hub

  1. Gateway to the East: Ely, often referred to as the "Canoe Capital of the World," is situated on the eastern edge of the BWCAW. This bustling town is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a range of amenities, outfitters, and a warm, welcoming community. The town serves as a strategic starting point for those venturing into the eastern reaches of the wilderness.

  2. Cultural Delights: Ely boasts a rich cultural scene, with art galleries, museums, and local festivals that celebrate the area's history and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the International Wolf Center, immerse themselves in local art at the North American Bear Center, or simply stroll through the town's charming streets lined with shops and restaurants.

  3. Diverse Entry Points: Ely provides access to a variety of entry points, each offering a distinct paddling experience. From serene lakes ideal for beginners to challenging routes for seasoned adventurers, Ely's entry points cater to a range of skill levels and preferences. Paddlers can choose routes that wind through dense forests, traverse expansive lakes, or lead to historical sites like the pictographs on Hegman Lake.

Grand Marais: Harbor of Tranquility

  1. Scenic Grand Marais Harbor: Grand Marais, perched on the shores of Lake Superior, offers a different but equally enchanting entry point to the BWCAW. Known for its picturesque harbor, vibrant arts scene, and breathtaking views of the largest freshwater lake in the world, Grand Marais provides a unique blend of outdoor adventure and coastal charm.

  2. Artistic Oasis: Grand Marais is a haven for artists and creatives. The town is dotted with galleries, studios, and the renowned North House Folk School, where visitors can immerse themselves in traditional northern craft and outdoor skills. The local arts scene adds a cultural dimension to the wilderness experience, making Grand Marais an ideal destination for those seeking a well-rounded adventure.

  3. Lake Superior's Majesty: The entry points near Grand Marais offer access to the BWCAW's western reaches, with routes leading to pristine lakes and dense forests. Paddlers can also explore the unique opportunity of paddling along the rugged coastline of Lake Superior, providing a different perspective on the region's natural beauty.

Choosing Your Adventure:

While both Ely and Grand Marais provide access to the BWCA, the choice between them depends on your desired experience. Ely offers a gateway to the eastern wilderness, with diverse entry points and a vibrant town atmosphere. Grand Marais, on the other hand, combines wilderness adventure with the charm of a coastal town, providing access to the western expanse of the BWCA.

Whether you're drawn to the rich cultural scene in Ely or the artistic tranquility of Grand Marais, both towns offer an unforgettable introduction to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Whichever path you choose, the adventure that awaits in the pristine wilderness will leave you with memories to last a lifetime, remember to leave no trace so it is accessible for years to come!
